Obama Family Adopted Dog To Ease Empty Nest When Girls Aren’t Home

The Obama family welcomed another furry friend into their family on Aug. 19 — a pup named Sunny! In a brand new interview with CNN, President Obama explained that the decision to adopt a new pet was also an effort to fill their home as their girls are growing up and will soon be on their own!

CNN Anchor Chris Cuomo sat down with President Barack Obama in Syracuse, New York on Aug. 22. The Obama family just adopted a new pup named Sunny — and the president explains that he and First Lady Michelle Obama considered how quickly their daughters Sasha and Malia are growing up when they decided to fill their nest with another furry friend!

Barack Obama’s Daughters Are Growing Up So Fast

President Obama’s young daughters are growing up right before his — and our! — eyes. “Malia and Sasha are just doing great,” he updated during his CNN interview, crediting Michelle for all of her hard work in raising them. “They are poised, they’re smart, they’re funny. But most importantly they’re kind, they’re respectful to everybody.  You know, I just couldn’t be prouder of them.”

With his daughters, ages 15 and 12, getting older and building lives of their own, the president is noticing that they’re already far less concerned with spending family time:

What I’m discovering is that each year I get more excited about spending time with them, they get a little less excited. But they love me, so they want to pretend like they want to spend time with me. So they’ll come into my office and they’ll pat me and say, hey daddy, I love you and they’ll give me like a 10 minute conversation. Then they’ll say, ‘ok, daddy I got to go. I’ll be gone all weekend, and I’ll see you on Sunday night’.

We’re sure a lot of fathers of teenage girls can identify!

Barack Obama’s Decision To Get Another Dog

President Obama explained that the fact that the girls are always on the go added to the family’s decision to get another dog! They’re also considering how lonely their other dog, Bo, gets when no one’s home:

I think there is an element for Michelle and me of, you know, we see what’s coming and we need to make sure that we got somebody who greets us at the door when we get home. But part of it is also Bo.

Yep, Bo was getting lonely because the two other puppies are grown up. And they still have some responsibilities for him, but they’re not always around between school, sports practice, all that stuff. And so Bo was starting to look a little down in the dumps inside the house. And Sunny, the new dog. she’s only a year old and, uh, the truth is she’s faster than she is, she jumps higher, she’s friskier.

What do YOU think, HollywoodLifers? Do you think it’s cute that the Obamas got another dog?
